FEATURED PROJECT

Sherman Phoenix

Small Business / Entrepreneurial Hub

Project value: $3.5 million
Project completion: 2018

Project highlights: This project lived up to its name, rising from the ashes of a fire-damaged, vacant bank building to become a hub for entrepreneurs of color. The project was spearheaded by co-developers Juli Kaufmann of Fix Development and JoAnne Johnson-Sabir of Shindig Café, and it engaged neighborhood investors to strengthen racial equity and build inclusive economic opportunities in Milwaukee’s Sherman Park neighborhood. With its exciting mix of small businesses focused on food, wellness, arts and culture, the Sherman Phoenix has become a destination for visitors from across the city, creating 100+ jobs in the neighborhood and helping build community wealth.

Client’s perspective

“I met Monique more than a decade ago. I was new to real estate development and, as a woman, found myself seeking more gender representation in the field as well as an opportunity to learn from the experience of somebody with a broader set of values that looked at real estate beyond just a ‘nuts and bolts’ and bottom-line perspective to a broader community-inclusive perspective. Monique is exactly the right fit — a depth of experience and meticulous attention to detail, coupled with a big heart to do the right thing to make our communities better. She is an invaluable asset to every project.”
